Countdown to NASA Space Apps Challenge

NASA Space Apps ChallengeThis weekend will see the Met Office again linking up with sites across the world for the NASA International Space Apps Challenge.

This year, the Met Office is the European lead event for the Space Apps Challenge, with other events in the UK being held in London, Glasgow, York and Leicester.

In Exeter, over 70 people will be collaborating on challenges which have been submitted by NASA teams and other contributors around the globe.

One challenge designed by Catherine Muller of Birmingham University and Michael Saunby of the Met Office is Smart Cities, Smart Climate. The challenge will look at how sensor networks in cities can be used to monitor the climate in urban areas.

As more of the world’s population now inhabit towns and cities, and the part of the world’s surface covered by built-up environments is growing, Urban environments are becoming increasingly important and relevant to study. Therefore much more data and tools for analysing that data are required.

Spaces are still available for Space Apps Challenge in Exeter. You can follow all the action from the weekend on Twitter @spaceappslondon and @spaceappsexeter.

  1. what a load of jibberish you havent got a clue what you are going on a bout the suns low solar activity is the cause for our weather going back into a little iceage again nasa as comfirmed at last that our suns low solar activity is going on for the next 100 years at the least and this means a very small amount of the suns heat budget will be lost which will have massive complications on the earths atmosphere and ocean temps which will send us into a little iceage as it did in the 1600s to the early 1800s the effect its having allready onthe earths atmosphere can be seen with the southward track of the jetstream alowing bitterly cold easterly winds to drag in bitterly cold air from the arctic and siberia this high pressure blocking cyclone keeps the jetstream from forming mild westerly winds over the uk and bringing in wet mild weather to our shores so we are caught in persistant dominant cold easterly winds for weeks on end causing great hardship today as it did in the 1600s to 1800s nortrhsea temps are very cold 4 degrees at best only 1 degree off denmark very cold indeed the northern hemesphere as had a record breaking dec in 2012 there was more snow covering taken by satellites over the whole northern hemesphere than at any other time in records and jan 2013 had the 6th highest snow cover since 1967 earths solar activity is at its lowest since records began in the 1800s and the suns solar wind is at a 50 year low in speed its slowing down and its cooled by 13percent say nasa satellites and the gulf stream as been found to be slowing down eveidence by nasa satelittes we have entered another little iceage the evidence is overwhelming the winters of 2009 to 2010 broke records and the summer broke records the winter of 2010 to 2011 broke records so did the summer the summer of 2012 broke all records and the winter 2012 to 2013 broke records to infact 2012 to 2013 is now known as the year without a summer from april 2012 to now april 2013 we still havent had a nice settled warm sunny weeks weather
